By Christina Ostmeyer, Summer Meals Advocate
Though members of the Kansas Appleseed team spent most of the week at conferences such as the Kansas Conference on Poverty, we were still able to visit some fantastic summer meals sites!
Wallace County Extension
Sharon Springs, KS
July 17, 2017
This year, Western Kansas saw the start of a many new programs and sites, and as a native Northwest Kansan, I jumped at the opportunity to visit a few of these sites. On Monday, I visited Sharon Springs's site, which is coordinated by the KSU Sunflower Extension District and sponsored by the Kansas Food Bank. After enjoying their meal, kids participated in an activity where they made ice cream in a bag, learning about how to measure ingredients and what causes the milk to freeze!
Oberlin City Park
Oberlin, KS
July 18, 2017
The Kansas Food Bank also sponsors a site in Oberlin, KS, and on July 18th, Feeding America, a nationwide network of member food banks, visited the Oberlin Summer Food Service Program site. Annually, CHS hosts “Harvest for Hunger” to raise money for the Kansas Food Bank, which supports local and mobile food pantries and programs such as Food 4 Kids and Bob Box. This year, CHS Inc. raised just under $65,000 to support hunger relief in the following counties: Greeley, Wallace, Sherman, Thomas, Gove and Decatur, and CHS presented the Kansas Food Bank with the check at this visit. Additionally, the Oberlin program has many volunteers who lead activities, read with kids and play games! Sharon Springs and Oberlin and examples of awesome programs in rural communities.
Lawyers & Lunch in Lindsborg
Lindsborg, KS
July 20, 2017
On Thursday, Rebekah and six members of the Kansas Women Attorneys Association, which held a conference in Lindsborg, stopped by Trinity United Methodist Church for lunch in Lindsborg. The Lindsborg program has great participation thanks to support from the entire community. Stores all over Main Street have the flyer on their counters and in their windows, and a different church signs up to serve the meals each week. Last week's lunch was served by the group from the Methodist Church, pictured below.
Check back for updates on our last week of site visits next week!
