In Kansas, 1 in 5 children is food insecure, with inconsistent access to adequate nutritious meals.
Unfortunately, many Kansas families struggle to take advantage of federal nutrition programs designed to reduce food insecurity. Kansas ranks 42nd in the country for eligible families' participation in the SNAP program (known as food assistance in Kansas) and 45th for children's participation in the Summer Food Service Program.
Policies at the national, state and local levels make it difficult for families to access these programs, so Kansas Appleseed created the Hunger Action Team, (originally Childhood Hunger Action Team) to gather advocates and supporters to take action to ensure all Kansas kids and families get the nutrition they need to grow up healthy and strong.
